The Casa Botines by Antonio Gaudí is one of the only three works that Gaudí carried out outside of Catalonia, the best known Spanish architect internationally. The other two works are the Capricho de Comillas in Cantabria and the Episcopal Palace of Astorga in León. All three are located on the Camino de Santiago, a World Heritage Site. What makes Gaudí one of the great architectural contributions on the Jacobean Route.
The building was conceived before installing a tenement house, on the ground and semi-basement floors, two entrepreneurial merchants from Leon ( Simón Fernández and Mariano Andrés), until then located in one of the old squares of the Barrio Húmedo.
At the meeting point, we will begin our visit to the outside of the building where we can contemplate its irregular and slightly pyramidal plan, it has been rightly said that Casa Botines reminds of a winter palace, a fairy tale palace.
No constructive detail passes without the supervision of the architect: the double-span doors (easily removable, to facilitate the movement of furniture), the sash windows (very unusual in León), the fittings, as well as the use of undercover spaces and the stairs that give access to the interior patios.
We will have the most spectacular views from the towers, where we will contemplate the best-known monuments of León: such as the Roman and medieval walls, the Romanesque San Isidoro, the Gothic cathedral, the Renaissance Guzmanes Palace, some of the most characteristic buildings of the expansion from the city such as the Alfonso V hotel and the Casa Goyo.
We will end the visit with free access to the Pinacoteca, so that you can enjoy at your own pace, the 12 rooms with more than 200 works by well-known artists such as Francisco de Goya, Joaquín Sorolla, Salvador Día or Eduardo Chillida.
