The Plaza del Grano or Plaza de Santa María del Camino, as it is officially called because it is at the back of the church of the same name, is located in the southern part of the Historical Quarter. It's a large square of medieval origin with cobblestone floor where formerly held the market for grain and various agricultural products and tools. Many people think that it is the most beautiful square of the city, for its aspect and for the tranquillity that is breathed in it.
In the centre of the square, and sheltered between two leafy trees, is the most striking element of the square. This is a fountain with a square pedestal on which stands a small attic column with a capital with acanthus leaves and belfry in which the coat of arms of the city is distinguished.
Today this picturesque square is used in thefestival of San Froilán to display thetraditional carts decorated typical of thisfestival.
