The Plaza Mayor de León is located in the Old Quarter of the city, specifically in the popular Barrio Húmedo. It was one of the most important markets that were set up on the outskirts of the city wall in medieval times, where products grown in the countryside, bread and domestic animals were sold. It also served as a place for public executions and bull fighting ring.
As in the past, the traditional weekly market, which takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays, is still held here. Fruits, vegetables, sausages, cheeses and clothesare sold.
During the festivities of San Juan, San Froilán and the carnivals it is a very crowded are a due to the events and concerts that take place here. The same thing happens during Holy Week, since most of the processions have this popular square as their point of passage.
During the summer months, the Plaza Mayor becomes an unbeatable meeting point, the bars take their terraces out into the street to delight tourists and locals.
